Gas moves grit, cloth moves oil

Dry dust lifts and goes. Skin oil, cooking film and the mark left by a fingertip stay exactly where they are, because there is nothing loose about them. Those want contact.

Cloths, a shammy and wipes

Microfiber for dry work on glass, a shammy for the smeared display that needs a little more grip, moist wipes for a touchscreen that half a dozen people have been prodding all day.

Kits by machine

The laptop, keyboard and tablet kits put the can, the cloth and the swabs in one box, sized for one machine. It is the shortest route from a dirty screen to a clean one.

The order that works

Blow first, wipe second. Grit on a screen is abrasive, and a cloth dragged across it is a cloth grinding it into the coating. Clear the loose material with the can, then take the oils off the bare glass with the cloth.

Do it the other way round and you get a clean looking screen with fine scratches you will notice the next time the sun hits it.

Cloths are not disposable

A microfiber cloth works because of the fiber structure, and it stops working when the fibers are packed with what it has already picked up. Wash it, skip the fabric softener, and let it dry on its own.

A cloth that has been used to wipe down a workbench is a cloth carrying grit. Keep the screen cloth for screens and let something else handle the bench.
