By the gear
Cameras and lenses
Sand in the focus ring, dust on the front element, grit in the mount and the lint that collects in a bag.
Blow before you brush
Anything you drag across a front element drags whatever is sitting on it too. Clear the loose grit with the can first, and the cloth has nothing left to grind.
Keep your distance from glass
Work from further back than feels necessary and use short taps. Close range and a long hold put cold liquid on the element, and coated glass does not enjoy a sudden change of temperature.
A can that fits the bag
The 3.5 oz can is in the line because photographers kept asking for a can that fits where a lens hood fits. It is the size that actually gets carried.
Around the barrel
Zoom and focus rings are knurled, which is exactly the shape that holds sand. Turn the ring slowly and work the stream along the groove rather than at it, and the grit comes out before it gets driven into the helicoid.
The mount and the rear cap deserve a pass too. Grit that lives on a rear element or a contact ends up inside a camera body sooner or later.
The sensor is not this job
A duster is for the outside of a camera. Do not aim one into an open body or at an exposed sensor: that is work for a blower bulb and, past a certain point, for somebody with a swab kit and better light than you have.
The mirror box, the bayonet and the inside of a lens cap are all fair game. The shutter and the sensor are not.
